Brooklyn, N.Y. - The art and media arts departments of Long Island
University's Brooklyn Campus will showcase the work of their graduating
seniors in an exhibition at the Campus's Salena and Resnick galleries
from May 1 to May 31. The mixed-media exhibition features paintings,
sculpture, photographs, and ceramics. A reception for the artists
will take place on Wednesday, May 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibit is
free and open to the public.
The art department features the work of four women of different backgrounds.
Emmanuella Alcindor of Brooklyn exhibits clay sculptures that express
her emotional experiences. Karen Carter of Baltimore creates an installation
suggesting a house that centers on the idea of displacement. Hanna
Ahary, of Yemeni descent, exhibits oil paintings on canvas using images
of veiled women to portray the oppression of women in Middle Eastern
cultures. Cirella Jones, of Trinidad, showcases mixed-media artworks,
including wall hangings, sculpture and digital images, as a reflection
of her experiences as a young artist.
About 10 media arts seniors will display computer graphics and photography.
The program, which is the largest department within the Campus's division
of arts, offers both B.A. and M.A. degrees that fuse traditional art
theory, methods and production with the technology of today's new
media.
The art department offers a B.A. in visual arts, a B.F.A in art education
and a B.F.A. in studio art. The latter degree allows students to pursue
their interest in art more intensely than a B.A. with a major in art
would allow. Students take a reduced core and concentrate on art classes
in areas such as drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking,
color, calligraphy and art history.
Gallery hours are from Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.,
and Saturday/Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information
on the exhibit, call (718) 488-1198.
