Brooklyn, N.Y. -"Linkages: Women,
Their Families, Neighborhoods and Global Community" is the
title of a film festival that will take place on Saturday, May
18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Spike Lee Screening Room of the
Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University. Co-sponsored by the
Brooklyn Chapter of The Links, Inc., an international organization
of African-American professional women, and the Campus's media
arts department, the event is free and open to the public.
The day-long festival is designed to showcase the talents and
accomplishments of visual artists in contemporary cinema. A jury
of film and lay professionals viewed short and feature-length
films and videos in the Independent, College Student, and Youth
categories and selected those to be shown for their exploration
of the positive linkages that women of African descent have with
their families, communities and the broader world. Genres include
animation, narrative, documentary and experimental films.
The Links is an organization with more than 270 chapters and 11,000
members in 42 states, the District of Columbia, the Bahamas and
Germany. The Brooklyn Chapter was established in 1952. In celebration
of its 50th anniversary, the chapter hopes to heighten the public's
awareness of its involvement in and support of the arts and artists
of African descent through its sponsorship of the film festival.
Other co-sponsors are the Brooklyn Arts Council's 36th International
Film and Video Festival and BCAT.
