Brooklyn, N.Y. - As a direct result of the public safety concerns
raised by 9/11, the School of Continuing Studies at Long Island University's
Brooklyn Campus is offering a certificate program in Criminal and
Civil Investigation.
"With the tragic events of last year that greatly impacted the
New York City area, we have answered America's call for programs that
train students in the protection of our citizens," said John
Roche, associate dean for the school. "There has been a shift
in demand for certain skills, for both profit and non-profit industries."
The Civil and Criminal Investigation Certificate Program explores
many different topics of law enforcement, according to Zandrene H.
Johnny, coordinator of the school's Public Safety Institute. Courses
cover subjects such as court systems, civil rights, local, state and
federal law enforcement jurisdictions, evidence gathering, litigation
support and basic tort investigations.
Taught by former law enforcement officers, courses offered this fall
are "Introduction to Law Enforcement and Investigations"
and "Introduction to Fraud Investigations." The spring semester
will include "Advanced Fraud Investigations," "Undercover
Operations and Electronic Surveillance," "Violence in the
Workplace and Crisis Management" and "Civil Investigations."
Roche notes that all applicants will have to undergo a criminal background
check and fingerprinting before acceptance into the program.
The certificate program is expected to appeal to retired police officers
and people who want a career change. Both Johnny and Roche note that
there are jobs available as a fraud examiner in corporations and private
institutions. Says Roche, "There are so many types of fraud around
insurance fraud, social security fraud, computer fraud, mail
fraud, credit card fraud, Internet fraud, identity fraud, retail fraud.
These are just the tip of the iceberg. We are filling a need in these
areas."
