Brooklyn, N.Y. - Noted for its theatricality, costuming and choreography,
the American Bolero Dance Co. will perform at Long Island University's
Brooklyn Campus on Wednesday, September 18 at noon in the Triangle
Theater. It will commence the fall season of the Dance Department's
"Afternoons at LIU" dance series. The performance is free
and open to the public.
Founded in 1996 by artistic director Gabriela Granados, the company's
goal is to bring the songs, history and tradition of Spanish dance
to the United States. It embraces the multi-ethnic styles arising
from the centuries of cultural flow between Spain and the Americas.
Peruvian-born Granados began her dance training at age four in a wide
range of classical and regional Spanish dances and ballet. As a choreographer,
she has staged dances for many national and international companies,
including the Ballet Municipal de Lima, the Virginia Opera, the Bronx
Symphony, the Baltimore Opera and the Chora Theater in Athens, Greece.
In 1998, Granados and her company made their Carnegie Hall debut.
Granados was on the faculty of the Neubert Ballet Institute for more
than 10 years and has also taught flamenco at Broadway Dance Center,
both in Manhattan.
The program is sponsored in part by the Puffin Foundation LTD
and with support from the Campus's provost's office. Seating is
on a first-come, first-served basis. The dance department offers
a B.F.A. in dance, with concentrations in performance and choreography.
