Asian Diaspora Conference: Remembering and Imagining, Oct. 2

Brooklyn, N.Y. - The experience of diaspora and displacement – and the role of remembering and imagining - in the production of contemporary art is the theme of a one-day conference at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus, on Wednesday, October 2.

"Asian Diaspora II: Remembering and Imagining" is the second conference at the Brooklyn Campus to address the dispersal of Asian people from their native lands. It celebrates Asian culture and focuses on cultural translation in the arts and the challenge for artists of creating a new place of belonging.

The highlights of the day are:
Buddhist dance workshop by Hyonok Kim, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., in the Dance Studio, Room M323.
Kun-Yang Lin and Dancers, a company that blends Asian traditions with postmodern dance, from noon to 1 p.m., in the Triangle Theater.

Two films, "Doubles: Japan and America's Intercultural Children" and "Remembering Wei Yi-fang, Remembering Myself," from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., in Library Learning Center (LLC), Room 122.
A panel discussion moderated by professor Haesook Kim on memories and imagination in art, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., in LLC 122. Panelists include Hyonok Kim, artist Sung-Ho Choi, dancer Kun-Yang Lin and Dr. Gopal Sukhu, director of Asian Studies at Queens College.

Gallery opening of "Between Places," featuring the work of three Korean artists, Sung-Ho Choi, Myong Hwa Jeong and Eunsuk Joo, in the Salena Gallery.

Reception, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., in the Salena Gallery.
The conference, sponsored by the Campus's Dance Department together with the Art, Music, Media Arts, Sociology and Anthropology departments, is free and open to the public. For more information, call (718) 488-1051.
