Brooklyn, N.Y. - Telling fanciful tales in magical-realist terms,
two authors of diverse backgrounds Mexican novelist and poet
Carmen Boullosa and Korean writer Mia Yun will read from their
works at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus.
Part of the English Department's multicultural "Voices of
the Rainbow" series, the readings will take place on Wednesday
October 2 at 10 a.m. in the Humanities Building's 4th Floor Lounge,
and are free and open to the public.
Boullosa, one of Mexico's most acclaimed writers, is the author
of poetry collections and plays, as well as nine novels, two of which
have been translated into English. "They're Cows, We're Pigs"
evokes the "blood-soaked reality" of 17th-century pirates
in the Caribbean. "Leaving Tabasco" tells the coming-of-age
tale of a young girl in an eccentric Mexican town in the 1960s. Critics
have described her work as "wickedly funny and imaginative,"
and "vibrant."
A native of Korea, Mia Yun's first novel, "House of the Winds,"
deals with a young girl growing up in the aftermath of the Japanese
occupation of the Korean War. Her debut novel has been described as
"superlative," "remarkable," and "a warm
and vivid reminiscence." Yun is the Korea correspondent for the
literary quarterly, "Evergreen Review."
The "Voices of the Rainbow" series is funded by the
office of Provost Gale Stevens Haynes. For more information, call
