Brooklyn, N.Y. Known for its socially and politically charged
vision, Urban Bush Women will fuse dance, music and story telling
with the spiritual traditions of African Americans and the African
people at a performance at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus.
Free and open to the public, the company will perform on Wednesday,
October 23 at noon, in the Campus's Triangle Theater, as part
of the Dance Department's "Afternoons at LIU " series.
Founded in 1984 by choreographer and artistic director Jawole
Willa Jo Zollar, the vanguard company tours extensively each year.
It has performed around the world, including England, Brazil and
Australia. Among the prestigious festivals it has performed at
are Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Spoleto, USA, and the National
Black Arts Festival.
In addition to more than 30 works for Urban Bush Women, Zollar
has created works for Ballet Arizona, Philadanco, the University
of Florida, and her critically acclaimed dance, "Shelter,"
for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. She received her M.F.A.
in Dance from Florida State University, where she holds a Nancy
Smith Fichter professorship in the dance department.
The company will be in residence at the Brooklyn Campus during
the week of October 21 to 24, teaching repertory and technique,
as well as a special workshop for high school students on October
