Annual Spring Dance Concert
Features Flamenco
Brooklyn, N.Y. - Offering an array of artistic viewpoints, dance works by students and faculty of Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus will take center stage in the dance department's annual spring concert. The performances will occur on Thursday, April 11; Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 14 at 3 p.m. in the Campus's Triangle Theater. Ticket prices are $10 for general admission; $8 for students with ID and senior citizens. Seating is on a firstcome, first served basis. In an effort to show the various ways in which dance may be presented, graduating senior Nadyia Jones will perform a piece she created that explores space, rhythms, and dynamic weight transfers through creative partnering and shifting balances. She will be joined by Melvin Fogle, Nicole Frye, Hallie Gerstel and Ernesto Mancebo. Visiting artist Andrea Del Conte has choreographed a series of classical flamenco sequences, which will be performed by students from her technique class, including Leticia Donegan, Nicole Frye, Nadyia Jones and Dean Maitland. Accomplished flamenco guitarist Arturo Martinez will accompany their performance. Nathan Trice, adjunct professor of dance at the Campus and artistic director of Nathan Trice/RITUALS, has created a new dance work for members of his junior/senior class and for Janelle Barclay, a recent graduate of the dance department's B.F.A. program. Clara Byrne, also an adjunct professor of dance at the Campus and artistic director of Clara Byrne Dancers, has choreographed a vibrant new work to the songs of Aretha Franklin. The dancers will include Barclay, Fogle, Gerstel and Mancebo. The program will also feature a surprise guest artist to round out the department's offerings. The dance department will host its annual High School Choreography Conference on Wednesday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in which high school students will perform their own original choreography that will be judged by a panel of professional dancers. The performances will be preceded by technique and choreography classes. The dance department offers a B.F.A. in dance, with concentrations in performance and choreography.
