Allen and Kelvin C. James Spin Yarns
Brooklyn, N.Y. - African-American author Jeffrey Renard Allen and Trinidadborn Kelvin Christopher James will read from their works at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus on Monday, April 8 at 10 a.mßß., as part of the English Department's multicultural "Voices of the Rainbow" poetry and fiction reading series. The event, which will take place in the Library Learning Center Room 124, is free and open to the public. Allen, who was born in Chicago in 1962, has taught at Queens College since 1992. "Rails Under My Back," an intergenerational story of a southern African-American family and its journey north, is his first novel. Critics have already named Allen as a successor to James Baldwin and Ralph Ellison. His book has been described as "a courageous feat of storytelling," and "the triumphant debut of a most powerful and utterly original voice. " It was named A New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Trinidadian-American Kelvin James holds a B.Sc. from the University of West Indies and a doctorate in science education from Columbia University Teachers College. As he says, he "meandered into the craft of fiction." He was awarded a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in fiction in 1989 and a National Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in literature in 1996. His works include the shortstory collection, "Jumping Ship and Other Stories," and the novels, "Secrets" and "A Fling with a Demon Lover." On Wednesday, April 17 at 1 p.m. in the Humanities Building 4th floor lounge, there will be a faculty reading. Brooklyn Campus Professors Wayne Berninger and Andrea Libin and graduate student Mei-Luen Liu will read from their works. Berninger wrote a collection of poems called "Laughing on the Inside," and Libin is the author of "Blue Water," a collection of short fiction.
