Brooklyn, N.Y. —Long Island University’s Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
will award degrees to more than 200 students at its 114th
Commencement Exercises, to be held Friday, May 16 at the
Brooklyn Campus Athletic Field. One of the
oldest and largest institutions of its kind in the nation, the
school was established in 1886 as the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy
and affiliated with Long Island University, now the country’s
seventh-largest private university, shortly after the University
was founded in 1926.
Dean
Stephen M. Gross said the class of 2003 would help answer a severe
national shortage of pharmacists. “With shortages in every area
of pharmacy practice, these soon-to-be new pharmacists are desperately
needed in communities all around the country. These graduates will
find many career opportunities awaiting them,” Dean Gross said.
Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree Recipients
The commencement speaker is Craig Fuller, who will be honored with the Doctor of Humane Letters.
President and chief executive officer of the National Association
of Chain Drug Stores, he has significantly shaped public health
policy through promotion of the chain drug industry. He also has
made extensive contributions through his work in public life, most
notably during eight years in the White House as assistant to the
president for cabinet affairs under President Reagan.
Also receiving a Doctor of Humane Letters is Robert Cartwright, the president and
general sales manager for Fuji Photo Film U.S.A. Inc. In addition to important professional accomplishments,
he has worked vigorously to promote a range of philanthropic causes:
ensuring the establishment of a training center for the blind and
disabled; advancing diversity in the chain, drug and photo industries;
and generously supporting initiatives at the College, in particular
its Retail Drug Institute.
George Morrow will also receive a Doctor of Humane Letters degree.
He has used his passion for science and keen business sense to build
a highly successful career in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology
industry. Until he was nearly 40, he was a high school chemistry
instructor and middle school basketball and baseball coach. Moving
into the corporate world, he advanced steadily and today is executive
vice president of worldwide sales and marketing for the biotechnology
giant, Amgen, Inc., where he oversees $3.5 billion in commercial
operations.
