Message from Provost Gale Stevens Haynes about September 11, 2001

Brooklyn Campus rings bells of campus clock tower in memory of four students

"This Thursday, September 11, many of us will remember how the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University was the first stop for thousands of New Yorkers fleeing the devastation of lower Manhattan two years ago. Even amid fear and uncertainty, students, staff and faculty rushed to give comfort to evacuees. Nursing and health services faculty provided respiratory and other emergency aid; others set up large-scale water distribution efforts, and provided rest stations, pillows, blankets and simple gestures of kindness and support.

"On that day, dozens of members of our University family perished. Among them were parents, partners, spouses, alumni, and four LIU students - Eli Chalouh, Marlyn Garcia, George Paris, and Felix Vale.

"This September 11, at 10:05 a.m. and 10:28 a.m., the times that each of the World Trade towers fell, the Brooklyn Campus clock tower bells will chime four times, for each of the students we lost. Their names are inscribed on a plaque to be placed in their memory within the garden area between the pharmacy and health sciences buildings.

"Also on Thursday, Father David Ihenacho, the Brooklyn Campus chaplain, will hold a liturgical service in the Campus chapel at noon, with an interfaith gathering for prayer and reflections. Songs and prayers for peace in the world are planned, and refreshments will follow.

"As we remember our students and the many others who died on that tragic day, we can be consoled by the courage and spirit of our community and the love for each other that sustained us then and enriches all of us now."
