| Brooklyn, N.Y. Sophia Ortiz, a junior at Long Island Universitys
Brooklyn Campus, has been honored by being elected to the Executive
Committee of the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC). Following
an arduous and highly competitive nomination and application process,
Ortiz was one of three students elected to represent a national membership
comprised of students from more than 800 colleges and universities.
She looks forward to exercising her new responsibilities at an upcoming
NCHC conference in Jackson, Mississippi. "The conference will
give us a wonderful chance to exchange ideas and learn from one anothers
programs," she explains.
Ortiz emigrated from Ecuador with her family at the age of one
and a half and for many years has resided in the Bushwick section
of Brooklyn. She is majoring in English and is pursuing a minor
in finance. After graduating from Long Island University, she plans
to attend law school and then work in corporate law. Asked about
the recent spate of corporate scandals, she asserts, "Nothing
is perfect. All of these problems show people the areas where they
need to become better. I believe that we can learn from our mistakes."
Reflecting on her overall experience in the Brooklyn Campus
Honors program, Ortiz says that "Honors has given me a sense
of belonging and a home. It has challenged my way of thinking and
expanded my views." According to Bernice Braid, director of
the University honors program and dean of academic and instructional
resources, "Sophia has proven herself to be a leader here at
the Brooklyn Campus, and now will speak for student interests in
a new arena. Were all very proud of her."
