Statement
from Gale Stevens Haynes, Provost, Brooklyn Campus,
Long Island University, on Faculty Job Action Announcement
The following statement
was issued by Brooklyn Campus Provost Gale Stevens Haynes in response
to the job action by the faculty union:
"The collective
bargaining agreement between Long Island University and Brooklyn
Campus faculty expired on August 31. The University administration
is working hard to settle all open contract issues with our faculty
union and is seeking to reach a new agreement as soon as possible.
We are disappointed that the union decided to reject the package
offered by the administration. We believe that our offer is a
fair balance between the needs of our employees and fiscal prudence.
It includes a 12.5 percent increase over three years for full-time
faculty members, whose salaries average approximately $70,000;
a reduction in workload; and the preservation of generous healthcare
benefits at no cost to employees. The administration is asking
only for future employees to share the expense of their family
coverage.
"Negotiations with the union are continuing, and we plan
to meet together with a federal mediator to help us reach a settlement
more quickly.
"The Campus will remain open, regardless of any job action
by the faculty. All activities and events surrounding Orientation
Day, Advisement, Registration, Student Financial Aid Services,
Placement Exams, etc. will take place as scheduled, and students
are encouraged to take advantage of these Campus services. Many
faculty members will continue to teach as scheduled, and students
are advised to attend their classes.
"Staff members are meeting with students to answer questions
in the Library Learning Center, room 124, from 9:00 a.m.-11:00
a.m. and 4:00 p.m.- 7:30 p.m. Students also can check for updated
information online at www.liu.edu/brooklyn/news
or by calling the Campus at 718-488-3333.
"The education of our 11,000 students is of the utmost importance
to all of us here at the Brooklyn Campus. I assure all students
and their families that a full fall semester will be held and
that all parties are working diligently to come to an agreement
quickly."
