Brooklyn, N.Y. Scores of first-time voters and others at
Long Island Universitys Brooklyn Campus will hear state and
local officials tell students about "The Importance of Voting,"
which is especially urgent as legislators grapple with education-funding
questions.
"Get Out the Vote" day will take place on Tuesday,
October 21, from 11 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. in Health Sciences Room 107.
An actual voting booth will be located outside HS 107 for students
to use in practice voting. About 150 freshmen are expected to attend.
Your vote counts, but only if you use it," said Provost Gale
Stevens Haynes. "Most of our students depend on financial aid
to help pay for their tuition and they expect our state legislators
to support education funding."
Among confirmed event participants are:
- Borough President Marty Markowitz
- Congressman Edolphus Towns of the 10th Congressional
District
- Senator Velmanette Montgomery of the 18th Senatorial
District
- Assemblyman Roger Green of the 57th Assembly District
Individuals can register to vote on site. Participants will receive
free T-shirts. The event is sponsored by the Student Services Council-Legislative
Committee. For more information, call (718) 488-1514.
Long Island University opened its Brooklyn Campus in 1926, welcoming
a diverse population at a time when other major universities enforced
quota systems against racial and ethnic minorities. Some 30,000
students currently are enrolled at the universitys three residential
and three regional campuses, including nearly 11,000 at the Brooklyn
Campus. Located at the corner of Flatbush Avenue Extension and DeKalb
Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn, the Campus is accessible to all major
bus and subway routes and the Long Island Rail Road.
