Mark Morris Dance Group Will Teach and Perform
At Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus, November 5

 

Brooklyn, N.Y. – The Mark Morris Dance Group, the internationally acclaimed company known for its musical sensitivity and wry humor, will perform and be in residence at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus.

The dance concert will take place on Wednesday, November 5 at noon in the Campus’s Triangle Theater, as part of the Dance Department’s "Afternoons at LIU" concert series. It is free and open to the public.

From November 3 -6, the company will teach repertory and technique to dance students at the Brooklyn Campus, along with a special workshop for high school students on November 5.

Founded in 1980 by Mark Morris, the dance group gave its first concert in New York City followed by a steadily expanding touring schedule in the United States and in Europe. In 1986, the company made its first national television program for the PBS series "Dance in America." In 1988, the Mark Morris Dance Group was invited to become the national company of Belgium, and spent three years in residence at the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels.

The company returned to the United States in 1991. It has performed at major venues such as the Virginia Arts Festival and at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. Its London seasons have garnered two Laurence Olivier Awards. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma has frequently collaborated with the Dance Group. Its projects include the 1997 Emmy Award-winning film "Falling Down Stairs" and the 2002 dance "Kolam."

Born in Seattle, Washington, Morris studied with Vera Flowers and Perry Brunson. Early in his career he performed with Lar Lubovitch, Hannah Kahn, Laura Dean, Eliot Feld, and the Koleda Balkan Dance Ensemble. Since forming the Dance Group he has created over one hundred works for the company. In 1990, he founded the White Oak Dance Project with Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Much in demand as a ballet choreographer, he has created works for the San Francisco Ballet and received commissions from the American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet and the Paris Opera Ballet. His work is in the repertory of the Geneva Ballet, New Zealand Ballet, English National Ballet, and the Royal Ballet, Covent Garden. Named a Fellow of the MacArthur Foundation in 1991, he has received honorary doctorates from The Boston Conservatory of Music, The Juilliard School, Long Island University, Pratt Institute, and Bowdoin College.
