Students Bring Pharmacy Week to Good Morning America, Today Show
Audiences
Brooklyn, N.Y. - National Pharmacy Week saw students from Long
Island University's Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy
and Health Sciences on network television, bearing the message:
talk to your pharmacist if you have questions about your medications.
National Pharmacy Week, first observed in 1925 and this year during
the week of October 19-25, highlights the vital role pharmacists
play in the nation's health care.
The twelve LIU students and faculty advisor Prof. John Lonie nearly
stole the show from Good Morning America hosts Diane Sawyer and
Charles Gibson, along with meteorologist Tony Perkins, who tried
to stump the student pharmacists with surprise questions from
the national pharmacy board exam, asking for example, "What
is the incubation period of chicken pox?"
The undaunted students, in their white lab coats for the early
morning program, answered correctly - "14 to 16 days"
- during their nearly five-minute ABC appearance on Tuesday, October
21.
Later, on Friday, October 24, they joined nearly 50 pharmacy students
from five colleges of pharmacy outside the studios of NBC's Today
Show, repeating their message about how the community can benefit
from pharmacy services and the pharmacist's expertise.
Said Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy Dean Stephen
Gross, "The pre-dawn efforts of our students to reach these
important audiences underscores the enthusiasm and dedication
of these aspiring pharmacists. America soon will benefit tremendously
from their services." Nearly 10 million viewers may have
seen the students in the two network appearances.
Kelvin Vo Tran, president of Long Island University's chapter
of the Academy of Students of Pharmacy, helped coordinate the
ABC as well as NBC event, which also included students from the
University of Rhode Island's College of Pharmacy, Rutgers University's
College of Pharmacy, St. John's University's College of Pharmacy
and the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy.
The Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health
Sciences, part of Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus, is
one of the oldest and largest schools of its kind in the country.
