Thought-Provoking Art Embellishes the Galleries
At Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus in September

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Two exhilarating displays of art with diverse themes welcome students to the fall semester at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus in September.

An artists’ group from Haiti presents colorful paintings and vibrant wall sculptures in an exhibition titled “Sant Kiltirel ‘Se Lide,’” featuring works by Alain Pamphile, Eddy Jean Remys, Peralt Falaise, Jose Delpe, Pasko, and Claude Saturne. It takes place in the Campus’s Salena Gallery from September 1 to September 30, with an opening reception for the artists on Wednesday, September 22 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Concurrently in the Campus’s Resnick Gallery is “Becoming 1969-2004,” featuring mixed-media works by Brooklyn artist Marjorie L. Stephens. An artist’s reception will take place on Wednesday, September 15, from 5 to 8 p.m.

A practicing Roman Catholic, Stephens’ two- and three-dimensional works reflect the universal questions of religious faith and man’s relationship to man and to the universe. “I’ve always believed that the artist is a conduit for God’s ideas,” she says. “They are gifts to me and I share them with others.”

Stephens came to art later in life, at age 40, after working as an editor for several years. She studied at the now-defunct Brooklyn Museum Art School, where she eventually worked.  She says creating art gives her a sense of consolation and purpose. “When you make something that pleases you, it consoles you too. Art is my life’s work.”

Gallery hours are from Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday/Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call Gallery Manager Nancy Grove at (718) 488-1198.

Long Island University opened its Brooklyn Campus in 1926, welcoming a diverse population at a time when other major universities enforced quota systems against racial and ethnic minorities. Some 30,000 students currently are enrolled at the university’s three residential and three regional campuses, including nearly 12,000 at the Brooklyn Campus. Located at the corner of Flatbush Avenue Extension and DeKalb Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn, the Campus is accessible to all major bus and subway routes and the Long Island Rail Road.
