Brazil, From Military Rule to Semi-Democracy, is Topic of Talk

Brooklyn, N.Y. – The Latin American and Caribbean Studies program of Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus will present a discussion on Brazil’s struggles to achieve democracy.
Jorge Zaverucha, distinguished professor of the Magistrate Superior School of Pernambuco, Brazil, will talk on “Brazil: From Military Rule to Semi-Democracy,” on Thursday, October 14, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Health Sciences Building, Room 121.
An expert on the Brazilian military, Zaverucha will speak about Brazil’s military regime and its practices, and explain the difficult struggle to democratize the country after the military withdrawal from government in the 1980s. The event is free and open to the public.

Long Island University opened its Brooklyn Campus in 1926, welcoming a diverse population at a time when other major universities enforced quota systems against racial and ethnic minorities.
