Long Island University to Honor Outstanding Scholarship and Teaching
Eight faculty members to receive awards on April 27

Brooklyn, N.Y. – On Thursday, April 27, at a special awards ceremony at the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University, a total of eight faculty members from the University’s two residential campuses will be honored for excellence in scholarship and teaching.

The 27th Biennial Trustees Award for Scholarly Achievement and the David Newton Awards for Teaching Excellence will be presented during a ceremony that takes place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday, April 27, in the Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts. A reception will follow.

“The TASA and Newton Awards affirm the tremendous talent of our faculty as scholars and teachers, respectively,” stated University Vice President for Academic Affairs Jeffrey Kane.  “This year,” he added, “the award recipients represent a wide range of academic disciplines, highlighting both the diversity of the faculty’s expertise and the broad faculty commitment to excellence in teaching. TheLong Island University community is indebted to these individuals for their intellectual contribution to the University and its students.”

The honorees are members of the faculties at the Brooklyn Campus, including the Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the C.W. Post Campus, located in Brookville, N.Y.

The University presents TASA honors biennially to faculty members to recognize them for extraordinary scholarly achievement.  A jury of distinguished scholars and artists outside the University reviews nominations and selects winners based on their scholarly contributions, especially those achieved while employed at Long Island University, and reputation among academic peers. Winners receive a $1,200 award and engraved medal.

At this year’s TASA winners are Kristana Arp, professor of philosophy at the Brooklyn Campus and Geoff Goodman, associate professor of English at the C.W. Post Campus.

The David Newton Awards, named for Dr. David Newton, a former executive vice president of Long Island University and endowed by former trustee Abraham Krasnoff, recognize faculty members who continually strive to maintain Long Island University's highest teaching standards. Winners are selected by a Campus-based committee of their peers using criteria such as teaching presentation, attitude, expectations of students, and professional development and knowledge. Each winner receives a $1,000 award and a glass “apple” award engraved with their name.

Newton Award winners from the Brooklyn Campus are Sealy Ann Gilles, associate professor of English, Aaron Lieberman, associate professor of counseling, and Warren Ratna, professor of pharmacology at the College of Pharmacy. From C.W. Post, Newton Award winners are Gerald Lachter, professor of psychology, Gavrielle Levine, associate professor of education, and Seetha Tamma, associate professor biomedical sciences.
