Special Educational Services Program at Long Island University’s
Brooklyn Campus Is Awarded Newcombe Foundation Grant

Funds help students with disabilities pay for tuition, equipment, housing costs

Brooklyn, N.Y. – For nearly a quarter century, Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus has received scholarship support from the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation to assist students with disabilities enrolled in its Special Educational Services Program. With an award of $30,000 for the coming school year, the Foundation’s total support for the Campus has reached $514,000.

The grant, according to Newcombe Foundation Executive Director Janet A. Fearon, “recognizes the excellent supportive services the University provides for students with disabilities and acknowledges the difficult economic circumstances many of these students face, including extra expenses due to their handicaps.”

Robert Nathanson, associate professor of special education at the Brooklyn Campus, extols the significance of the support, noting that the funds encourage students with disabilities to continue toward their college degrees with needed funds for tuition, adapted equipment, special housing and other school-related costs.

“The Newcombe grants have enabled the University to provide much-needed financial assistance directly to our students with disabilities,” states Dr. Nathanson, adding, “Over the years, many students have written letters of appreciation to the Foundation saying that the grants made the difference in their being able to meet their School expenses.”

This year, with its $30,000 to the Brooklyn Campus, the Foundation awarded a total of $350,000 to nine college and universities to provide Newcombe Scholarships for Students with Disabilities, bringing the Foundation’s cumulative funding for this scholarship program, since it began in 1981, to more than $6.8 million.

The Brooklyn Campus is distinguished by dynamic curricula reflecting the great urban community it serves. Distinctive programs encompass the arts and media, natural sciences, business, social policy, urban education, the health professions and pharmacy, and include the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, the Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics, the D.P.T. in Physical Therapy and the Pharm.D. in Pharmacy. A vibrant urban oasis in downtown Brooklyn, this diverse and thriving campus offers academic excellence, personalized attention, small class size and flexible course schedules. In 2005, the Campus completed a new performing arts complex, which includes the 320-seat Kumble Theater, and in 2006 opened a $45 million Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center. The new facilities serve the needs of both the Campus and community.
