Urban Bush Women Dance Troupe Will Perform on July 29 at
Long Island University’s Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Known for its socially and politically charged vision, the dance group, Urban Bush Women, will present a program that combines dance, drumming and spoken word at the Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus.

The company will put on two performances of “Place Matters” on Saturday, July 29, at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. The Kumble Theater is located at the Brooklyn Campus at the corner of Flatbush and DeKalb avenues in downtown Brooklyn. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $2 for children and students.

“Place Matters” is the culminating performance of the group’s Brooklyn-based Summer Institute, featuring artists and activists from 17 states, Canada and the United Kingdom.  The purpose of the Summer Institute is to connect concert professionals and community-based artists in a learning experience to maximize the possibilities of the arts as a vehicle for social activism and civic engagement. This year's Institute emphasized the unique dancing culture and politics of New Orleans, both pre- and post-Hurricane Katrina.

Founded in 1984 by choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, the vanguard company tours extensively each year. It has performed around the world, including England, Brazil and Australia. Among the prestigious festivals it has performed at are Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Spoleto, USA, and the National Black Arts Festival.

To purchase tickets, call the Kumble Theater box office at (718) 488-1624. For more information, visit www.urbanbushwomen.org.

Long Island University opened its Brooklyn Campus in 1926, welcoming a diverse population at a time when other major universities enforced quota systems against racial and ethnic minorities. More than 13,000 students are enrolled at the Brooklyn Campus. Located at the corner of Flatbush Avenue Extension and DeKalb Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn, the Campus is accessible to all major bus and subway routes and the Long Island Rail Road.
