Brooklyn Campus and Faculty Union Sign New Contract

Brooklyn, N.Y. – An agreement has been reached for a five-year contract between the administration and the faculty union at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus. It replaces the three-year accord that expired August 31.

“This is a fair and responsible agreement that balances concerns about salary needs, fast-rising health insurance costs and student tuition levels. It will be very helpful as we continue to build this valuable institution,” Provost Gale Stevens Haynes stated.

“With our outstanding faculty, we are committed to providing an excellent education for more than 8,000 diverse and talented undergraduate and graduate students,” the provost added. The fall semester begins on Thursday, September 7.

The contract between the University and the LIU Faculty Federation covers more than 860 full-time and adjunct faculty members. It requires employee contributions to health insurance premiums while providing annual wage increases of four percent totaling 20 percent over the life of the contract, with provisions for cost of living adjustments in 2009 and 2010. Among other provisions, the Campus agreed to make lump sum payments to the union and to a trust fund for adjunct faculty.

Faculty members voted to approve the new contract on Tuesday following negotiations that continued after the previous agreement expired last week.
