Long Island University-Brooklyn Provost Gale Stevens Haynes
To Be Sworn In as Chair of Roosevelt School District Board

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Gale Stevens Haynes, the provost of Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus, will be sworn in as the chairwoman of the board of trustees of the Roosevelt School District. An exemplary educator who oversees one of the most diverse campuses in the country, she was selected unanimously by the State Board of Regents.

The swearing-in will take place on Thursday, January 25, at 6:30 p.m. at the headquarters of the Roosevelt School District, 240 Denton Place, Roosevelt, N.Y.

“I look forward to working with my fellow board members in identifying the strengths and building upon the positives to move the school district forward,” said Ms. Haynes, a resident of Elmont, L.I. The main responsibilities of the members of Roosevelt Governing Board are to formulate and approve policies for the school district. The members are not paid for their services.

In recognizing the challenges of her new responsibility, the provost noted her three-decade career in higher education serving young urban students. At the Brooklyn Campus, which educates more than 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students, she manages an annual budget of over $150 million.

Provost Haynes has led her institution through a remarkable renaissance: doubling student enrollment, creating new facilities, diversifying faculty, forging links with the community and transforming the Campus into a vibrant urban academic center. One of her visions – the Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts – became a reality in 2005. It was followed by the 2006 opening of the $45 million Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center, which provides the Campus and community with the area’s finest facility for competitive and recreational sports and fitness. This month, the Brooklyn Campus opened an academic nursing center that offers comprehensive preventive health services to residents throughout the community.

Provost Haynes began her association with the Brooklyn Campus as a student, earning a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in counseling. She started her career as director of the Higher Education Opportunity Program. Upon completing her law degree at St. John’s University in 1983, she became Long Island University’s legal counsel before assuming the position of Provost in 1989.

Long Island University opened its Brooklyn Campus in 1926, welcoming a diverse population at a time when other major universities enforced quota systems against racial and ethnic minorities. Located at the corner of Flatbush Avenue Extension and DeKalb Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn, the Campus is accessible to all major bus and subway routes and the Long Island Rail Road.
