Community Forum – ‘The U.S. Supreme Court vs. Equality in Education’ – at
Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus, Wednesday, September 26
Brooklyn, N.Y. – Concerns about the recent United States Supreme Court decision that barred the consideration of race in some school desegregation efforts are to be raised at a community forum at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus on Wednesday, September 26.
Entitled, “The U.S. Supreme Court vs. Equality in Education: Are We Going Backward or Forward?” the program is hosted by the Brooklyn Campus School of Education as part of its “School Talks” series on issues affecting urban education.
Last June 28, the Court declared that public schools in Louisville and Seattle can’t take explicit account of race to achieve integration. The 5-4 ruling has been criticized by some as devastating for the future of equality of education.
Among the academic, legal and policy experts expected at the forum is NAACP Legal Defense Fund assistant counsel Anurima Bhargava, who was closely involved in the landmark cases, Parents Involved in Community Schools vs. Seattle School and Meredith v. Jefferson County Board of Education.
Panelists at the upcoming forum will offer individual assessments of the Supreme Court decision, followed by responders and questions from audience members.
Scheduled participants are:
Anurima Bhargava, Esq., assistant counsel, NAACP Legal Defense Fund
Luis O. Reyes, fellow, Bronx Institute at Lehman College and former member of New York City Board of Education and chair of the Board's Latino Commission on Educational Reform.
John Liu, member of the New York City Council and the Council’s Committee on Education He is the first and currently the only Asian-Pacific American to be elected to citywide office in New York.
