Long Island University Launches New Program: Nanny Education
Good news for Brooklyn parents, childcare providers and kids

Brooklyn, N.Y. – At a time of growing need for quality childcare services, the School of Continuing Studies at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus has announced a new certificate program targeting childcare providers. Going beyond state requirements for training in violence prevention and child abuse reporting, the program can help these professionals strengthen a range of skills and improve their salary qualifications.

“This program will benefit caregivers, parents and particularly children,” noted Dean James Bostic of the School of Continuing Education, adding, “The demand for skilled childcare providers has become especially acute as more and more households have two working parents or one-parent families.” The New York State Labor Department ranks employment prospects for childcare workers in New York City as “very favorable,” its highest rating.

The program, “Taking Care of Kids,” will be offered over two weekends, beginning in late October. With a total of 23 hours of class work, it is designed to teach effective techniques and strategies for ensuring a safe and supportive environment for children, addressing issues in child development, behavior, health and safety, and the topic of the caregiver and family relationship. It also includes classes mandated by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, “Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse” and “Violence Prevention and Intervention.” All classes will be led by experienced childcare providers and include case studies, role-playing, creative activities and training in safety and emergency response

Those completing the program will receive a Certificate in Childcare from Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus School of Continuing Education.
