New Book on Trends in the Car Manufacturing Industry

- Book Focuses on "Ford, Regaining the Competitive Edge" -

Brooklyn, N.Y. - Car manufacturing is an extremely competitive industry as the media news headlines show. Higher fuel prices, a faltering economy and other market trends have hit the bottom lines of many automotive businesses. Long Island University Brooklyn Campus business professor Carl G. Smith, Sr., Ph.D., takes a critical look at one of these manufacturers in his new book, "Ford, Regaining the Competitive Edge - A Study of the Strategic Management Processes for Operational Success."

The book outlines the companies mission, goals, strategies, product and service portfolios, market share and profit performance, technology and employment information; key successes and failures are also discussed.

Dr. Smith will be present at Meet the Author/Book Signing sessions on Thursday, December 6, at 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5 p.m.-7 p.m., in the lobby of the Humanities Building at the Brooklyn Campus, which is located at the corner of DeKalb and Flatbush avenues. The event is free and open to the public.

"Ford Motor Company is currently trying to increase its global market share in automobile sales while facing slumping market share numbers in the United States," says Dr. Smith, an assistant adjunct professor in the School of Business, Public Administration and Information Sciences, who has been teaching, challenging, and counseling students on the fundamentals of business for more than twelve years.

"My book examines how the company uses information systems in this business climate," he adds. "The proper use of information systems by Ford will increase their ability to maintain a successful business in future years locally and globally."

He also notes Ford has recently introduced hybrid cars to attract new buyers. The company has also entered new markets, most of which are located in the Asian-Pacific region.
