A New Minor in Africana Studies Now Offered at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus Starting January 22, 2008
Brooklyn, N. Y. -- A new minor in Africana Studies is being offered at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus for the upcoming spring semester. An interdisciplinary program, it draws from the humanities, sciences and social sciences to focus on the contributions, worldviews and concerns related to the African Diaspora. Africana Studies joins a group of minors at the Brooklyn Campus that includes Latin and Caribbean Studies, Gender Studies and Asian Studies.
Two three-credit core courses, ”Introduction to Africana Studies,” and “African Civilizations,” and three electives are required for the 15-credit minor. “African American History,” “Slavery and the Literary Imagination,” “African Film,” “Blacks and the Law,” “Caribbean Literature” and “African-based Art” are among the electives offered.
The Africana Studies minor was created by Kimberly Jones, associate professor of history, Carol Allen, associate professor of English, and a lively faculty consortium at the Campus.
Noted professor Allen, “The program organizers have already launched several free cultural events open to the community in concert with the minor --The African Forum Series; and Music of the Spirit, a conference that included a jazz concert, film, discussion panels and a drumming workshop.”
The spring semester at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus begins on Tuesday, January 22. To find out more about the Africana Studies minor, or to enroll, call the Brooklyn Campus Admissions Office at (718) 488-1011.
