Inspiring Performances Dedicated to the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
at Long Island University’s Kumble Theater in January

Tickets are free for special show, multicultural discussion with author Kevin Powell
and NY1's Dominic Carter on Sunday, Jan. 20

Brooklyn, N.Y. – The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., brought inspiration and change to America through his courage, compassion and character. As the nation commemorates his legacy this month, Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus will celebrate his life and explore his teachings with a pair of events at its Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts. The theater is located at the Brooklyn Campus in Downtown Brooklyn at the corner of DeKalb and Flatbush avenues.

On Sunday, January 20, at 4 p.m., Kevin Powell and Akila Worksongs, Inc., present: “Looking For Martin: Are Dr. King and His 'Dream' Still Relevant?” Admission is free, but seating is limited. Doors open at 3:30 p.m.

Activist and writer Kevin Powell and New York 1 News anchor Dominic Carter highlight an afternoon of live performances and multicultural conversations on the life and legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Powell is the author of “Someday We’ll All Be Free.” Carter hosts NY1’s nightly political show, “Inside City Hall.” The afternoon will also feature DJ Reborn, emcee Toni Blackman, beatboxer Yako, poet Marne Bruckner and vocalist LaCresha Berry, as well as author John Buffalo Mailer and Domestic Workers United organizer Al-Jen Poo.

On Saturday, January 26, at 7:30 p.m., Restoration Youth Arts Academy presents: “My Soul Looks Back.” Tickets are $15.

Dedicated to Dr. King and Coretta Scott King, this performance celebrates these two individuals for their brilliance and commitment to social justice and peace. The company’s repertoire will mirror their struggle for human dignity in service of social change. The unforgettable words and images that reflect courage and conviction propel each step in a dance salute to this groundbreaking couple.

Restoration Youth Arts Academy is a comprehensive arts training center in Central Brooklyn for students from four to 19 years old.
