Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus Galleries
Showcase Native-American Artists in March

Brooklyn, N.Y.—In March, the galleries at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus will showcase diverse art works by Native-American artists. The exhibition, "Native Voices: Contemporary Indigenous Art," is free and open to the public.

The exhibition will run from March 4 to March 29 in the Campus’s Salena and Humanities galleries. The opening reception will take place in both galleries on Thursday, March 6, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Also, there will performances and readings by Native-American performers in the Salena Gallery on Sunday, March 9, at 4 pm. They include Miranda Belarde-Lewis and Myrton Running Wolf.

Curated by Raquel Chapa and Deborah Everett, Native Voices comprises three exhibitions of contemporary Native work at three Brooklyn venues - the Brooklyn Campus, FiveMyles Gallery and Kentler International Drawing Space – featuring the works of 21 artists. The exhibitions offer a rare opportunity for the New York public to engage with the work of contemporary Native artists from Canada and the United States. The works represent a cross-section of contemporary sensibilities and the challenges of the postmodern world. Some deal with issues of identity, including that of being an outsider in a mass society.

The artists represented at the Brooklyn Campus galleries include Thosh Collins, Mario Martinez, Peter Jemison, Yatika Fields, Jeffrey Gibson, Sarah Sense, Miranda Belarde-Lewis, Joseph Williams and Annabel Wong, Lorenzo Clayton and the Dust Dive.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, running concurrently in the Campus's Resnick Gallery is "Women in Science," curated by Professor Margaret Cuonzo.

Hours for the Salena and Resnick galleries are from Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday/Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the Humanities Building Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; closed weekends. Admission to the galleries is free. For more information, call Gallery Director Nancy Grove at (718) 488-1198.
