Free Jazz Clinics at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus;
Special Tribute to Baritone Saxophonist Cecil Payne, May 2

Brooklyn, N.Y. — Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus will present a series of jazz clinics this spring with appearances by pianist Jean-Michel Pilc, saxophonist Sam Newsome, trumpeter E.J. Allen and bassist Carlo DeRosa, A special tribute to legendary baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne will feature guest saxophonist Alex Harding. All events are free and open to the public.

The Brooklyn Campus is located in Downtown Brooklyn at the corner of DeKalb and Flatbush avenues.

  • Tuesday, April 1, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Humanities 106 - Jazz pianist Jean-Michel Pilc will perform with guitarist Gilad Hekselman and lead a workshop on jazz improvisation. Pilc's new trio album, "New Dreams," was released in 2007 on Dreyfus Jazz. Pilc has played with some of the best jazz musicians: Roy Haynes, Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman, Jean Toussaint, Kenny Garrett, Mingus Dynasty & Big Band. He has also worked with Harry Belafonte, as his musical director and pianist.

  • Tuesday, April 8, 4 p.m., Kumble Theater - LIU Faculty Concert - Jazz faculty will present original and classic works performed by saxophonist Sam Newsome, trumpeter E.J. Allen and bassist Carlo DeRosa.

  • Wednesday, April 30, 7 p.m., Kumble Theater - LIU Chorus and Vocal Jazz Ensemble Concert - featuring performances by talented students.

  • Thursday, May 1, 1 p.m., Kumble Theater - Student Jazz Ensembles Concert - featuring performances by student body.

  • Friday, May 2, 1 p.m., Kumble Theater - Solo Vocal Jazz Concert.

  • Friday, May 2, 7 p.m., Kumble Theater - Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium presents 9th Annual Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival. The LIU Jazz Ensemble, directed by saxophonist Sam Newsome, will present a concert honoring legendary baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne with special guest artist, baritone saxophonist Alex Harding.
