Brooklyn, N.Y. - A performing and teaching company that educates the public about the art of dance in an interactive and accessible way will take the stage at the Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts at Long Island University.

Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Co. will perform on Wednesday, April 9, at noon at the Kumble Theater, located at the University’s Brooklyn Campus on the corner of DeKalb and Flatbush avenues in Downtown Brooklyn. This event, which is free and open to the public, is part of the Campus Dance Department’s “Afternoons at LIU” series.

Known for its stylistic diversity, musicality, originality and accessibility, the company has appeared at venues throughout the country and abroad. A former member of Garth Fagan Dance and a guest artist with the Mark Morris Dance Group, Gwirtzman has received fellowships from the Sacatar Foundation (Brazil) Djerassi Resident Artists Program (California), and was invited by DanceEast, one of England's leading dance organizations, to attend the Rural Retreat 2008 at Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire, England.

The Dance Department Spring Concert will take place at the Kumble Theater on Friday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, April 26, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, April 27, at 3 p.m. Ticket prices are $15, general admission; $10 for students and seniors with ID.

Dance majors will present an exciting program of modern dance works by guest artist Camille A. Brown, new student adjudicated choreographic work and a restaging of a historic dance work by legendary choreographer Mark Morris.

Brown was a member of Ronald K. Brown/Evidence (2001-2007) and also dances with Renni Harris/Puremovement. She has been honored with awards and fellowships that include a 2006 Princess Grace Award in Choreography, New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Choreography and The Presidential Scholar of the Arts Award in Dance.

Morris formed the Mark Morris Dance Group in 1980, and has since created more than 120 works for the company. In 2007, he received the Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival lifetime achievement award.
