Brooklyn, N.Y. – Just one day before the first official presidential debate between John McCain and Barack Obama, student leaders at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus will hold their own forum featuring representatives for the two major presidential candidates.
The 2008 Brooklyn Campus Presidential Election Forum will take place on Thursday, September 25 at 11 a.m. in the Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts, located on the Brooklyn Campus in downtown Brooklyn at Flatbush and DeKalb avenues. The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are recommended. Please call (718) 488-1624 for more information.
The Campus forum will feature a panel of students quizzing representatives for the Democratic and Republican campaigns after hearing introductory remarks from each side.
Scheduled to appear for the campaigns are:
Chris Owens, president of the Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats
Roberta Weisbrod, vice chair of New York Citizens for McCain-Palin
Student panelists are:
Rony Enriquez, president Student Government Association
Ty Christian Joseph, vice president, Student Government Association
Michelle Horne-Findley, treasurer, Student Government Association
Vincent DePaolo, 2007-2008 Center for the Study of the Presidency Fellow
Refreshments will be offered afterwards with opportunities for voters to register and try using a real voting machine.
Preparing for Election Day on November 4, students and staff members have been conducting a voter registration campaign that will continue until the registration deadline on October 10.
Rony Enriquez, president of the Student Government Association and one of the registration campaign’s Campus organizers, said the election forum was highly anticipated among his peers. "Despite all the information available in the age of online communication, it is rare to have time in person with representatives of the presidential campaigns," he said. "We are grateful for this town hall opportunity, and look forward to discussing the concerns that affects us all, right here in Brooklyn."
