Brooklyn, N.Y. - An exhibition of modern video art and photography from Russia will be held at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus in downtown Brooklyn this fall.

“Under the Glass” will take place at the Campus’s Salena Gallery from September 1 to October 2, and is free and open to the public. The opening reception is on Tuesday, September 15, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Featuring artists such as Vera Fishkova, Kate Predko and Paulina Zayceva, this exhibition is the first in a series to offer visibility to artists from Russia’s provinces and cultural centers, according to curator Thomas Werner.

“Torn between an affinity to its conservative cultural roots and an ongoing need for a more demanding contemporary cultural conversation, Russia’s art world is finding itself at a turning point,” said Werner. He explained that this duality – the coexistence of modern customs and the cultural traditions of the Soviet period – is often illustrated through fantasy, fairy tale, performance, music, dance and documentary, with a touch of Russian humor.

Also on display at the Brooklyn Campus’s Humanities Gallery, from September 1 to October 2, are sculpture and photographs by artist Judith Shea, a notable presence on the city’s sculpture scene since the 1970s. The figures in her “Legacy Collection” reflect her training as a fashion designer.

Running concurrently in the Campus’s Resnick Gallery is high school student artwork, part of the Campus’s BASIS summer program.

Hours for the Salena and Resnick galleries are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday/Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Humanities Building Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; closed weekends. Admission to the galleries is free. For more information, call Gallery Director Nancy Grove at (718) 488-1198.
