“Voices of the Rainbow” Series Features Diverse Authors at
Free Readings at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus

- Writers include Thomas Sayers Ellis, Jacqueline Bishop, Kevin Baker, Roger Sedarat and Tiphanie Yanique at fall readings -

Brooklyn, N.Y. -Diverse authors working in different genres will read from their works at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus this fall. Part of the English Department’s “Voices of the Rainbow” series, the readings are free and open to the public.

The Brooklyn Campus is located in downtown Brooklyn, on the corner of Dekalb and Flatbush avenues.

Thomas Sayers Ellis and Jacqueline Bishop
A poet and photographer from Washington, D.C., Ellis co-founded the Dark Room Collective. Author of the highly praised collection, “The Maverick Room,” he has been published in Grand Street, Ploughshares and The Best American Poetry (1997, 2001). Bishop is a Jamaican-born poet, writer, painter and filmmaker. Founding editor of Calabash: A Journal of Caribbean Arts & Letters, she has written the novel, “The River’s Song,” and the poetry collections, “Fauna” and “Snapshots from Istanbul.”

Kevin Baker
Baker has been published in The New York Times, the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times and Harper’s magazine. His works include the historical novels, “Sometimes You See It,” “Paradise Alley,” “Striver’s Row” and “Dreamland,” set largely in Coney Island.

Roger Sedarat and Tiphanie Yanique
Sedarat teaches in the M.F.A. program at Queens College. He is author of the poetry collection, “Dear Regime: Letters to the Islamic Republic.” Yanique, a native of the Virgin Islands, teaches at Drew University. She is an award-winning author of fiction, poetry and essays. Her story collection, “How to Escape from a Leper Colony,” will be published in 2010.
