Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus to Celebrate Constitution Day
September 17th event to include a voter registration drive, a Bill of Rights poster contest and
the distribution of 2,500 copies of the U.S. Constitution to students

Brooklyn, N. Y. – Throughout the United States, Constitution Day is celebrated annually to honor the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. This year, Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus will celebrate the event with a voter registration drive, a Bill of Rights poster contest and the distribution of 2,500 copies of the Constitution to students.

The voter registration drive will empower students to exercise a fundamental right of American citizenship. They will have the opportunity to register to vote, to familiarize themselves with voting procedures and to learn to use a voting booth.

Students also can put their knowledge of the Bill of Rights to the test to compete for prizes in the Campus’ Bill of Rights poster contest. Colorful posters featuring a copy of the Bill of Rights in which an error deliberately has been inserted will be displayed across the Campus, and students will be challenged to detect the mistake. Correct entries will be put into a lottery, and three winners will be chosen.

The Constitution Day festivities will have an unofficial kickoff on Tuesday, September 15, with “Making a Difference: The Power and Responsibility of Being a Citizen,” a lecture delivered by Brooklyn Campus Associate Professor of History Stacey Horstmann Gatti as part of the Campus’ Welcome Week for freshmen. Associate Professor Gatti will speak from 11-11:50 a.m. in the Campus’s Humanities Building, Room 307.

Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus, which is home to a diverse population of more than 11,000 students, is located at Flatbush Avenue and DeKalb Avenue in downtown Brooklyn, just minutes from Manhattan.
