Brooklyn, N. Y. – New York State Assemblymember Hakeem Jeffries will speak on “Civic Responsibility and the Importance of Voting,” at a Legislative Forum at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus on Tuesday, October 20. The event, which promotes political engagement, is free for students and community members, and will take place in the Health Sciences Building, Room 121, from 11-11:50 a.m.
At the Forum, voter registration cards will be distributed and a voting machine will be available for practice outside the lecture hall.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Hakeem Jeffries attended New York University School of Law, where he graduated in the top ten percent of his class in 1997. Elected to serve the people of the 57th Assembly District in Brooklyn in 2006, he has championed legislation on affordable and safe housing, economic development of communities such as Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant, and the protection of student financial aid.
Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus is committed to registering students to vote and has had several registration drives in the past year. “We urge everyone who is eligible to vote to register, learn about the choices at hand and go to the polls,” said Brooklyn Campus Provost Gale Stevens Haynes.
The Brooklyn Campus is located near major subway lines and is just ten minutes from Wall Street. With more than 11,000 students, it offers programs in the arts and sciences, business, education, health professions, nursing, pharmacy and global studies.
