Want to Stop Smoking? ‘Quit and Win’ Smoking Cessation Program
at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus Kicks Off on 11/2

Free preparation, coaching and follow up counseling for quitting smoking on
November 19, the Great American Smokeout Day

Brooklyn, N.Y. – "Quit and Win," a free program of the Harriet Rothkopf Heilbrunn B’32 Academic Nursing Center at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus, has its Kickoff on Monday, November 2, in the Arnold & Marie Schwartz Athletic Center in Metcalfe Hall.

Quit and Win will prepare those who want to quit smoking on November 19, the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout Day.

"At the Kickoff, there will be helpful literature, spirometers to test lung capacity, carbon monoxide screening, and nurses to answer your questions about smoking," says Esther Levine-Brill, professor of nursing, who heads the undergraduate nursing program at the Brooklyn Campus.

On November 19, those that are in the Quit and Win program will gather in front of Luntey Commons in the Metcalfe Building to cheer each other on and exchange stories of quit day.

After quitting, participant will get ready to be eligible to win. They must check in every week at the Academic Nursing Center, where a special meter can indicate whether the carbon-monoxide level in your system is below that of a smoker. A drawing for prizes of $100, $150 and $250 will take place on December 16 for those who have kept smoke-free for the month.

At the Academic Nursing Center, options for support include group activities, individual coaching and nicotine replacement therapy (free and available if the participant is medically eligible).

Quit and Win faculty committee members include Levine-Brill, Doris R. Obler and Anne Scott (occupational therapy) and Eunice Y. Pyon (pharmacy).

Brooklyn’s only University-based nursing center, the Harriet Rothkopf Heilbrunn B’32 Academic Nursing Center is located in the lower level of the $45 million Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center. It provides valuable primary care services for the uninsured and underinsured, as well as students, faculty, staff and other members of the Brooklyn community. Regular services include health-risk screening, smoking cessation programs, nutrition counseling, and blood pressure monitoring.

Quit and Win is funded through a Wellness Grant from the Office of the Provost with support from the Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the School of Nursing and the School of Health Professions of Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus.
